For years, the debate over the safety of New York City’s streets has roiled without pause, from the highest corridors of elected office to the zealous corners of social media, inflamed whenever a pedestrian is fatally struck by a vehicle.
After the accident, Steve Vaccaro, a cycling advocate and a lawyer whose practice represents pedestrians and cyclists injured on the road, took to Twitter to assail opponents of proposed bike lanes and pedestrian islands in the neighborhood, which, he said, could have saved Amar’s life.
